Where and how to find housing?
Modified on Tue, 16 Sep at 2:22 PM
Welcome!
You have applied for one of our programmes and are ready to prepare for student life. We are delighted you have chosen Erasmus University Rotterdam and we are looking forward to welcoming you to our city and campus!
Now the practical side of student life in Rotterdam starts. First you need to prepare for your stay. We strongly advise you to start looking for housing on time and before arriving in Rotterdam as demand for housing is very high.
Please be aware that finding housing is always a student’s own responsibility. However, we do want to help you get started.
This housing webinar gives you tips to help in your search.
Partnerships Erasmus University
The University has partnerships with several housing companies. They have a limited number of rooms available (furnished and unfurnished) for international EUR students and have set a few application requirements. You are eligible to rent these rooms if you:
- Are a first-year student at Erasmus
- Have a non-Dutch nationality
- Are not older than 30 years old
Important: Each housing company has a specific day or period in which you can apply for accommodation. You can find the dates on their respective websites as well as practical tips. Make sure not to miss these dates!
Please mind that next to the application requirements, each housing company may have their own rules and regulations such as a set rental period, registration fee and/or additional rental costs.
Erasmus University also liaises with Housing Anywhere, which is a worldwide booking platform for international students.
Private housing
If you do not meet the requirements for the partnership housing or are unable to find accommodation through our partners, there are other options available to you. Private housing is one of the options. You can make use of housing platforms as an intermediary or housing agencies that can make arrangements for you.
If you are looking for housing for a long term period or are a starter on the rental housing market, Stadswonen Rotterdam may be the option for you.
Short stay housing
Are you an exchange student? You may find short stay housing for a set period of time with one of our partners. There is a limited number of rooms available with various end dates.
In case you are not able to find housing through our partners you may try and find housing on the private market or make use of alternative accommodations like staying with a host or in a hostel.
Legal aspects
After you have found housing, make sure you are aware of the small printing in your lease contract. You can use our tips for legal aspects to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Still in need of help with the legal aspects of housing? The Dutch Student Union, in cooperation of the European Student Network, may be able to help you by means of the Housing Hotline.
Keep an open mind
Finding housing may not be the easiest part of your journey as an incoming student. Although we understand you may want to live as close to the university as possible, we do recommend you also consider our neighboring cities like Capelle aan den IJssel and Schiedam. Our campus is easily accessible by metro from both cities.
