When and how can I file a request for dispensation?

Modified on Fri, 15 Aug at 3:26 PM

When you almost meet the standard requirements and/or personal circumstances beyond your control have influenced your study results, you can file a request for dispensation from the admission requirements.

You can write a dispensation request in the following situations:

  • You did not pass one course within a cluster when applying for the major seminar and bachelor thesis
  • You have used all possible opportunities in a serious way to pass the course; all examinations and re-examinations have been made. With the achieved grade you cannot compensate the course within the cluster.
  • When registering for the major seminar and bachelor thesis, you have achieved two compensable grades within a cluster. You have used all possible opportunities in a serious way to pass these two courses.
  • You did not pass one bachelor-3 course when registering for the (pre-)master. Because of this you cannot apply for your bachelor’s degree. You have used all possible opportunities in a serious way to pass the course in the next academic year. It is not possible to apply for dispensation if you have not completed the minor, the major seminar of the bachelor’s thesis.

Before you write a dispensation request, you are advised to carefully evaluate your process. If you have questions about the dispensation request you can contact the study advisers.

The request for dispensation should contain the following elements:

  • The number of credits you have not passed
  • The name(s) of the course(s) you have not passed
  • Your study planning for the upcoming year, including the course(s) you have not passed
  • The reason for not meeting the requirements
  • Your motivation why the Examination Board should grant you admission to the master's programme
  • If you refer to events you will have to include proof of that event

The request for dispensation must be submitted with your application. It is not possible to send in the request earlier; your request will be returned unprocessed. Failing to submit a dispensation request might result in the rejection of your application as your study progress overview will seem incomplete.
